Chignik Fisheries, Chignik Lagoon

Chignik Fisheries is a facility, formerly owned and operated as a cannery by Wards Cove Packing Company, located on the northwest shore of Chignik Lagoon, southwest of Dago Point, about 44 miles (71 km) south of Port Heiden and 36 miles (58 km) northeast of Perryville, Alaska. The cannery was operated from 1911 to the 1960s. From then until 1991 it was used as a support facility for the local fishing fleet.

Chignik Lagoon is an embayment on the Alaska Peninsula that trends northeast for 8 miles (13 km) to Chignik Bay on the Gulf of Alaska. The lagoon was locally named after Chignik Bay in 1899 by Lieutenant Commander J. F. Moser of the U.S. Navy on the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries steamer Albatross.

Wards Cove was founded in 1928 in Ketchikan and grew from a single canning line to a network of plants in Southeast Alaska, Kodiak, Cook Inlet, Chignik, and Bristol Bay. The company closed in 2004 and was sold to non-fishing interests. The impetus for the Civil Rights Act of 1991 was partially based upon Wards Cove Packing Company versus Atonio. About the background graphic

This ‘warming stripe’ graphic is a visual representation of the change in global temperature from 1850 (top) to 2022 (bottom). Each stripe represents the average global temperature for one year. The average temperature from 1971-2000 is set as the boundary between blue and red. The color scale goes from -0.7°C to +0.7°C. The data are from the UK Met Office HadCRUT4.6 dataset.
