Clinton Della Walker House, Carmel Point

The Clinton Della Walker House was designed in 1948 by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed around 1951 on 216 acres (87 ha) of Carmel Point, about 4.5 miles (7 km) southwest of Monterey and 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of Carmel, California. The piece of property on which the house is built was deeded to Mrs. Clinton Della Walker who asked Wright for a house designed “as durable as the rocks and as transparent as the waves”.

Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, designer, writer, and educator. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years until his death in 1959. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture.

Carmel Point is on Carmel Bay State Marine Conservation Area, a marine protected area in Carmel Bay, established in 2007 by the California Fish and Game Commission. It was one of 29 marine protected areas adopted during the first phase of the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative, a collaborative public process to create a statewide network of marine protected areas along the California coastline. The Carmel Bay State Marine Conservation Area precludes commercial extraction or take of invertebrates throughout the Bay but encourages recreational fishing opportunities for finfish from shore, kayak, or boat. Read more here and here. About the background graphic

This ‘warming stripe’ graphic is a visual representation of the change in global temperature from 1850 (top) to 2022 (bottom). Each stripe represents the average global temperature for one year. The average temperature from 1971-2000 is set as the boundary between blue and red. The color scale goes from -0.7°C to +0.7°C. The data are from the UK Met Office HadCRUT4.6 dataset.
