Crescent Beach, Ecola State Park

by | Mar 19, 2019

Crescent Beach is between Ecola Point and Chapman Point in Ecola State Park, about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Cannon Beach, Oregon. The beach is accessible by 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long hiking trail from Ecola Point.

Ecola was the destination of a trek in 1806 by the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery from Fort Clatsop, their winter encampment near Astoria. Captain William Clark and 12 members of the expedition traveled over very difficult terrain in search of a beached whale near present day Cannon Beach. Part of their route is now the 2.5 miles (4 km) long Clatsop Loop Trail over Tillamook Head. The park features several hiking trails through old growth forest, and access to isolated beaches. Ecola Point has excellent views of Haystack Rock, the Needles, and Tillamook Rock Light.

Ecola Point is an archeological site associated with the Tillamook people. Several ground depressions at the point have been interpreted as house pits, possibly indicating the presence of a semi permanent village. Two dense shell middens have preserved extensive faunal remains, along with other artifacts. Radiocarbon dates taken at the site roughly span a period from ca. 1100 CE to ca. 1700 CE. The site has the potential to yield information related to environmental change along the Oregon Coast, as well as settlement and subsistence patterns of the coastal tribes. Read more here and here. About the background graphic

This ‘warming stripe’ graphic is a visual representation of the change in global temperature from 1850 (top) to 2019 (bottom). Each stripe represents the average global temperature for one year. The average temperature from 1971-2000 is set as the boundary between blue and red. The colour scale goes from -0.7°C to +0.7°C. The data are from the UK Met Office HadCRUT4.6 dataset.
