Mount Douglas, Katmai National Park and Preserve

Mount Douglas is a stratovolcano with an elevation of 7,000 feet (2,134 m) situated south of Kamishak Bay, near the northern part of the Alaska Peninsula and within Katmai National Park and Preserve, about 113 miles (182 km) east of King Salmon and 91 miles (147 km) southwest of Homer, Alaska. Its summit holds a crater with a small lake roughly 525 feet (160 m) wide. The mountain was officially named in 1906 after nearby Cape Douglas, based on a 1904 report by USGS geologist George C. Martin.

The volcano is covered by the Spotted Glacier, which originates on Mount Douglas and flows north for 6 miles (10 km) to a terminal lake about 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. The lake drains via a 1-mile (1.6 km) stream into Kamishak Bay. Much of the volcano has undergone glacial erosion, and numerous ice and snow fields descend from the summit, with most meltwater draining toward Kamishak Bay. Isolated outcrops of high-silica andesite lava flows appear within the ice, and a relatively uneroded lava ramp lies on the northwest flank.

No historical eruptions have been recorded for Mount Douglas; however, unglaciated lava flows and active fumaroles point to recent activity. Alaska has more than 100 volcanoes, 54 of which are considered historically active. The Alaska Volcano Observatory monitors these volcanoes and studies volcanic processes to better assess the likelihood of future hazards.  Read more here and here.
